July 23, 2012
Dear Sir/Madam
It is of paramount importance and a cardinal rule of democracy that a peaceful demand of the people is met peacefully and amicably especially in light of the constitution that guarantees religious freedom and worship. In Ethiopia currently that is not the case with regards to the Muslims who constitute more than half of the population. The current government of Ethiopia has gone beyond any conceivable notion of decency or democracy to malign and marginalize the Muslims who are arguably one of the most peaceful, reticent and tolerant citizens in the world. The Ethiopian government is using the climate of fear and the spectre of terrorism to overshadow the basic human rights of more than half of its citizens. The government is using the religiously mandated Aweliya College as a test case to eradicate the millennium-old Islamic belief system that has stood the test of time and has been the hallmark for the exemplary character and mild manner of Ethiopian Muslims despite centuries of mistreatment and abuse by successive Ethiopian governments.
